Antique Shopping 101: Your Detailed Guide
Shopping at local vintage markets can be a delightful adventure or a nightmare you’d prefer not to embark on. Fear not! You too can find those one-of-a-kind goodies you’ve only seen on TV. Here are some essential tips to help you navigate antique markets with ease and incorporate your treasures into your home while maintaining a fresh, contemporary look.
Where to Go
If you’re not familiar with your local antique stores and markets start with a simple google search. You should be able to find websites and google reviews for the best places to go. In Central PA, some of my favorites include Carlisle Antique Mall, Bedford Street Antiques and Zelma’s Emporium.
Make a Plan
Before heading to the market, jot down the dimensions of the rooms where you might add new pieces. Be sure to note specific items you’re looking for or bring along paint chips to visualize how a piece will complement your wall colors. Set a budget but remain open-minded for unexpected finds.
Essentials
Be sure to carry a tote bag or backpack to hold small purchases and keep your hands free. If you’re eyeing larger items, pack a tape measure to ensure they’ll fit in your space and make sure your car or truck is cleaned out and ready for your treasures!
Look for Statement Pieces
Don’t overlook things at first sight; seek out unusual items you may normally overlook that will add character to your home. Consider your overall design—for example, “right now, I’m collecting cream-colored ceramic pots to contrast against dark walls in my lodge.” Remember, there are always pieces just waiting to be given new life.
Incorporate Thoughtfully
You can easily avoid an overly “decorated” look by thoughtfully placing antique finds. Mix them with your current pieces to create a balanced, eclectic style. These pieces can help serve as inspiration for your home’s character and your more contemporary pieces. And don’t hesitate to update pieces with a fresh coat of paint. Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore both have historic paint palettes that can breathe new life into your finds. You can also consider refinishing or reupholstering to breathe new life into old furniture.
Remember, antiquing is about discovering pieces that resonate with you and bring you joy. Happy Hunting!
